Car and Scooter Hire Information for Crete. Driving Holiday Rental cars

Driving on Crete is becoming easier all the time with major improvements having been completed in recent years on the northern road that connects most of the major cities on the island. Large sections close to Heraklion and beyond Istron have been widened and or rerouted for better transport links. Major bridges, a new tunnel and avoidance of major tourist bottlenecks have brought some journey times down significantly. The speed limit on the north coast road is 90km per hour for long stretches; maximum speed restrictions drop in lots of places, however, and are prominently marked on roadside signs. Roads on Crete can still be dangerous at times especially narrow mountain routes and main road junctions. Stay within the speed limits, drive with caution and enjoy the scenery as it changes across the island.

Motorbikes and Scooter Hire

Motorbikes or scooters can be rented in many major towns and even in most smaller destination resorts. Ranging from 50cc scooters up to powerful cruiser bikes including Viragos, prices, as with hire cars, varies according to class, time of season and location. Age and licence restrictions apply

Quad Bikes

We frequently receive requests for quad bike rental information. We apologise but we will not reply to such enquiries. We strongly recommend against the hire of quad bikes by inexperienced riders. The roads of Crete are not a place to learn and accidents can result in serious injury or death. UK Radio 1 carried a Newsbeat campaign in 2004, that we concurred with, highlighting the dangers of quad bikes.

Safety and Insurance

In order to safely enjoy your travels throughout Crete it is essential that you follow the same kind of simple advice that you would adopt when driving in the UK. Some of these would include

Don't drink and drive

Always wear a crash helmet or seatbelt as appropriate and dress with sufficient protection for your method of transport. If travelling in open top cars ensure that shade and cover are available with clothing and hats for all occupants.

Keep to the speed limits and be especially cautious when navigating through mountain roads

Make sure you understand what and what is not covered by your insurance policy on the vehicle. Inclusive insurance is strongly recommended. (excess may still apply) Make sure your travel insurance covers you whilst driving a hire car.

Check the vehicle for damage before you drive it away or take delivery. Bring any exisitng damage to their attention and have it noted on the rental agreement, in case of dispute at a later point.

Make sure that book-in and book-out of car is properly documented and that you are provided with appropriate paperwork.

Carry your passport, rental documentation and driving licence with you at all times when driving. These will be needed should the police flag you over in a roadside check.
